Windows 8.1 reached the end of support on January 10, 2023, and no longer receives software or security updates from Microsoft.

Furthermore, our desktop app is based on Electron, which itself is built on top of Chromium. The current version of Lunatask runs on the last Electron and Chromium versions supporting Windows 7 and 8, while newer versions of both no longer support these old systems.

Lunatask v1.7, due to be released in June, will drop support for these old systems as well, allowing it to receive new Electron and Chromium updates again. These updates are necessary so our desktop app gets better, faster, and more secure over time, as well as it will fix several issues present in the Chromium version used in our desktop app today.

One of these issues is related to the government in Mexico's decision to stop using daylight saving time (DST) starting this year. Unfortunately, the Chromium version used in Lunatask v1.6 is unaware of this change, causing users in Mexico to see the wrong time on the calendar and receive notifications prematurely. In this case, upgrading to a newer Chromium version is necessary to fix the issue.

Since we do not track our users thanks to our strict no-tracking policy, we are unable to determine how many of them will be affected by this change. At this time, many companies worldwide are going through a similar transition and we are sorry if this change disrupts your workflow.

Improvements

  • Settings -> Connected apps section was redesigned a bit

Fixes

  • Fixed a regression causing recurring events coming from CalDAV integration always showing as one-hour events when using local expand regardless of their actual length in the external calendar

Improvements

  • The task list now switches selected area and scrolls to a task after moving the task to a different area
  • A newly created task is now automatically removed if both name and note left empty after creation
  • When deleting a recurring task, the app now asks whether your want to delete the task and all future occurrences or only skip the current recurrence
  • There's a new note filter available when in "All notes" to show only notes without any notebook
  • Progress on a task is now available also in data export
  • When pressing ENTER in journal entry name input, journal entry content editor is now focused for parity with the same behavior on notes

Fixes

  • Fixed data export not working in the Mac App Store version of the app due to sandboxing
  • Fixed broken paste without formatting on Mac
  • Fixed natural language parser for setting up recurring tasks sometimes crashing the app on some unsupported rules
  • Fixed the app not scrolling to a task after running the timer when its position might have changed by the timer moving to the task to Started status
  • Fixed broken layout in tomorrow calendar's all-day events section on Windows
  • Fixed CalDAV integration's local expand feature for recurring events not working correctly with the recently added tomorrow calendar
  • Fixed the "create a note for calendar event" modal not redirecting to newly created note on submit

Fixes

  • Fixed regression causing past incomplete habits not to show up in the habit widget at the bottom of the calendar
  • Fixed regression causing the badge on the habit tracker menu item to count the number of remaining habits incorrectly
  • A few updates back, an in-app notification was added when authentication towards calendar integration expired. However, this notification was automatically hidden after several seconds. In most cases, the authentication expires while the app is minimized in Dock (on Mac) or system tray (in Windows), causing the notification to never be seen by the user. This update makes the notification sticky, so the user sees it and can reauthorize the integration directly from the notification the next time they open the app without going into the settings.

Features

  • Added "tomorrow" calendar and support for time blocking one day ahead. When the calendar sidebar is resized and made large enough, tomorrow appears, allowing you to plan out tomorrow hour by hour.
  • You can now track progress on tasks. Either you can set the progress manually (e.g. 40%), or it will be automatically calculated from the number of completed subtasks (in that case, the indicator will be shown slightly dimmed)
  • Journal can now be PIN-protected. You can set up a four-digit PIN and mark the journal as PIN-protected in the settings.
  • Calendar and quick note sidebars are now independently resizable
  • You can now drag and drop tasks between different sections and lists
  • Tasks now show how old they are all the time (in days, that's the number right of the task name). It makes the prioritization system better shine through and easier to follow.
  • Note content is now previewed in the note list
  • Pinned tasks and notes are now free features for all users

Improvements

  • You can now choose from 4000+ icons for your areas and notebooks
  • Interacting with workflows was simplified, resulting in the removal of the grouping picker
  • Grouping "none" (flat list of tasks) was removed from the list of workflow/grouping options (it can still be achieved, but it is not promoted)
  • When a four-digit PIN is set up, protected notebooks will now require the PIN to be entered instead of master password
  • Protected notebooks now automatically lock on app restart and when the app is backgrounded
  • You can now set the duration for how long a protected notebook (or PIN-protected journal) should be unlocked when unlocking
  • Added pin/unpin options to task and note bulk edit context menus
  • Calendar now automatically scrolls when dragging a task near its edge
  • Improved note list performance when a lot of notes in the notebook
  • Hovering over the mood tracker icons below the habit tracker now shows the date in the tooltip
  • Hovering over a future date on scheduled tasks now shows how many days are remaining
  • Besides using Enter or Space, you can now open task detail by pressing Arrow Right
  • You can now edit the template new journal entries are initialized with also in application settings
  • The next or previous note in the list is now automatically selected after deleting a note instead of leaving the note detail empty
  • The option to export all data in your Lunatask account was added to the macOS menu items (you can also trigger data export at any time by pressing CMD+E)
  • Improved icon contrast in light mode and calendar event brightness in dark mode
  • Other minor changes and visual improvements

Fixes

  • For scheduled and repeating tasks, prioritization now uses the date visible on the task to calculate its age instead of the actual date when the task was created
  • Fixed a few cases where moving a task into a collapsed section does not temporarily uncollapse the section
  • Removed Ctrl+N shortcut to create new tasks or notes on Mac to avoid conflict with emacs bindings to move the cursor
  • Fixed an issue causing causing dates on tasks shifting when traveling between timezones

  • In the settings, you can toggle whether you prefer showing the actual temperature or "feels like" temperature for your location
  • The mood tracker popup now has a slightly refreshed look more consistent with how journaling looks elsewhere in the app
  • The journaling section in the mood tracker popup now features a formatting toolbar
  • The app now switches the currently shown note to the first note in the notebook when switching notebooks
  • Minor reliability improvements and visual improvements in dark mode

  • New more subtle audio bell when a task timer completes
  • Clicking on blank space around a note, task description, journal entry, or quick note now focuses the editor
  • Formatting toolbar in notes has a new look and hides when the note is not focused
  • Added diagnostics section to settings with app version and cloud sync status
