Fixes

  • Fixed the task scheduling dialog being hidden behind the calendar/quick note sidebar when the sidebar is open
  • Fixed incorrect copy in the goal settings modal saying that completed tasks will be deleted as well when deleting goals which wasn't true – the option whether to keep or delete tasks under the goal is always for remaining tasks only, and completed tasks are always kept in either case

Features

  • The new Goal Tracking feature adds a new level of structure to your task list. Goals can be projects or other things you want to achieve in your life. Goals support deadlines and automatically calculate your progress toward the goal. You can also display tasks from multiple goals at the same time. Goals should solve most of the previous need to use too many areas of life where it did not make sense.

Improvements

  • The list of areas is now available in the new sidebar menu within the tasks view instead of the main menu, streamlining the app's interface
  • The journal has moved into the main menu and is no longer embedded within the habit tracker
  • You can now drag and drop multiple tasks into a different section, area, or goal at once
  • The option to edit the journal entry template was moved directly into the journal header for better discoverability and access
  • The setting for what tasks to count into the badge on areas is now per area instead of being global, so you can have, for example, the “Work” area showing the number of “coming up” tasks in the badge, but the “Social Life” area all “planned” tasks, making area badges much more useful
  • The logbook is now global (not per area) and its performance was massively improved when many tasks in the logbook
  • The natural language parser used for setting up recurring tasks now understands common numbers spelled out, so you can now use "every two days" instead of "every 2 days"
  • The picker for changing the task list sorting was removed as alternative sorting options did not bring much value and it was an additional concept that needed to be explained to new users, further complicating onboarding
  • The app icon is now rounded on Windows

  • Fixed checking a checkbox sometimes checking (but only visually) also the checkbox below
  • Fixed the editor scrolling all the way down and placing the cursor at the very end of the note when checking off a checkbox

Notes

  • As announced earlier, as of this update Lunatask no longer supports Windows 8 and older.
  • This update is versioned as v1.7.1 on the Microsoft Store due to a versioning conflict and is identical to v1.7.0 on other platforms

  • You are now able to reset a task's age used for prioritization. This can be useful, for example, when moving older tasks from "later" to "now", or from "pinned" tasks. It’s not meant to be used all the time, but you might have a task you have been tracking for months (or years even). Now you decide it’s time to work on it, and you might want to treat it as created today, so the task is not shown as the first task in the list despite it being the oldest task. You can reset the age of any task in the right-click context menu.
  • Journal entry editor is now automatically focused when opening the mood tracking popup or when the journal is unlocked there
  • The default name for notes created from calendar events was simplified to shorten it a bit
  • Settings -> Connected apps section now links new documentation articles on how to set up Shortcuts and Siri or Google Assistant

Windows 8.1 reached the end of support on January 10, 2023, and no longer receives software or security updates from Microsoft.

Furthermore, our desktop app is based on Electron, which itself is built on top of Chromium. The current version of Lunatask runs on the last Electron and Chromium versions supporting Windows 7 and 8, while newer versions of both no longer support these old systems.

Lunatask v1.7, due to be released in June, will drop support for these old systems as well, allowing it to receive new Electron and Chromium updates again. These updates are necessary so our desktop app gets better, faster, and more secure over time, as well as it will fix several issues present in the Chromium version used in our desktop app today.

One of these issues is related to the government in Mexico's decision to stop using daylight saving time (DST) starting this year. Unfortunately, the Chromium version used in Lunatask v1.6 is unaware of this change, causing users in Mexico to see the wrong time on the calendar and receive notifications prematurely. In this case, upgrading to a newer Chromium version is necessary to fix the issue.

Since we do not track our users thanks to our strict no-tracking policy, we are unable to determine how many of them will be affected by this change. At this time, many companies worldwide are going through a similar transition and we are sorry if this change disrupts your workflow.

  • Fixed regression causing past incomplete habits not to show up in the habit widget at the bottom of the calendar
  • Fixed regression causing the badge on the habit tracker menu item to count the number of remaining habits incorrectly
  • A few updates back, an in-app notification was added when authentication towards calendar integration expired. However, this notification was automatically hidden after several seconds. In most cases, the authentication expires while the app is minimized in Dock (on Mac) or system tray (in Windows), causing the notification to never be seen by the user. This update makes the notification sticky, so the user sees it and can reauthorize the integration directly from the notification the next time they open the app without going into the settings.

Features

  • Added "tomorrow" calendar and support for time blocking one day ahead. When the calendar sidebar is resized and made large enough, tomorrow appears, allowing you to plan out tomorrow hour by hour.
  • You can now track progress on tasks. Either you can set the progress manually (e.g. 40%), or it will be automatically calculated from the number of completed subtasks (in that case, the indicator will be shown slightly dimmed)
  • Journal can now be PIN-protected. You can set up a four-digit PIN and mark the journal as PIN-protected in the settings.
  • Calendar and quick note sidebars are now independently resizable
  • You can now drag and drop tasks between different sections and lists
  • Tasks now show how old they are all the time (in days, that's the number right of the task name). It makes the prioritization system better shine through and easier to follow.
  • Note content is now previewed in the note list
  • Pinned tasks and notes are now free features for all users

  • You can now choose from 4000+ icons for your areas and notebooks
  • Interacting with workflows was simplified, resulting in the removal of the grouping picker

Fixes

  • For scheduled and repeating tasks, prioritization now uses the date visible on the task to calculate its age instead of the actual date when the task was created
  • Fixed a few cases where moving a task into a collapsed section does not temporarily uncollapse the section
  • Removed Ctrl+N shortcut to create new tasks or notes on Mac to avoid conflict with emacs bindings to move the cursor
